Clearwater Paper (CLW) Analyst Ratings
Bulls say
Clearwater Paper is supported by a favorable mix of strong demand, pricing action, and cost discipline, with management noting it is sold out and carrying strong backlogs while pursuing a May $60/ton increase on roughly 70k tons of extruded products. The company’s Cypress Bend restructuring, including about 20% workforce reductions and a plan to run the mill at about 50% capacity, is expected to generate $8-12 million of annualized cost savings and help offset input inflation and higher maintenance costs. Liquidity also appears solid, with about $407 million available and potential cash support from roughly $20 million of working capital improvement, a $27 million tax receivable, and possible additional insurance proceeds.
Bears say
Clearwater Paper is facing a weak fundamental setup marked by razor-thin profitability, with Q126 adjusted EBITDA of just $1.9MM and 303k tons of volume below expectations, while 2Q26 guidance turned negative at $0 to -$10MM because of a $22-24MM planned maintenance outage and $5-7MM of higher input costs. Its balance sheet and financing risk are also rising as $275MM of notes and a $79MM ABL facility move toward current status in H227 and H226, even as S&P cut the rating to B+ in January 2026 and Moody’s lowered it to B1 earlier this month. The company also faces structural pressure from SBS supply-demand imbalance, import competition, and customer concentration, with 46% of 2025 sales tied to its top 10 customers and only $17MM of additional insurance proceeds to offset ongoing operational strain.
